Utility1 Replacement - The process has begun

posted Aug 15, 2013, 6:24 PM by Brad Clark   [ updated Oct 7, 2013, 9:29 AM ]

The Truck Committee has had several meetings to work on a replacement for our Utility1.

Utility1 is currently a 1994 GMC Topkick Truck, that was formerly a Ryder rental truck.  We purchased it used in 1997.  Now with over 110,000 miles on it, it is due for replacement.  It goes to more calls than any other of our apparatus as it carries some of the First Response equipment.

We first looked at several Utility trucks in the County - Bristol, Starksboro, New Haven, Vergennes - who all gave us the time to look at their trucks (Thanks guys!!)  We found we liked what New Haven's truck had to offer the most, so we contacted the manufacturer, Hackney Emergency Vehicles.  We know we wanted a 5 or 6 man cab, and a "Walk-around" style.

In June we met with a sales rep and went over some drawings.  He sent back a revised drawing which the committee again went over with more revisions.  That was sent back to him, and now we are waiting for "final" drawings and a preliminary price.  Then we'll see where we go from there.

Ice Water Rescue with our New Rescue Sled

Kevin Comes and Geoff Nelson did a great job on this custom made Ice Water Rescue Sled.  It worked really well!  In addition to testing out the sled, we managed to put in a couple of hours of training, not to mention getting a chance to go for a swim in January!

Andrea and Geoff assess Kevin's mental state and prepare to move him onto the rescue sled.

(Mental state? Kevin?)

How many people do you know of that can go swimming in the lake in January?
